Timber window frames once upon a time were the only option for homes and businesses. All that changed at the end of the 20th Century when uPVC windows became the window frame of choice for many home owners across the North West of England. Almost 40-50 years on the environmental impact of plastic window frames is starting to be felt.
In a recent report by Greenpeace the evidence against plastic windows frames from an environmental and economic stand point became clear
The production and disposal of PVC-u windows leads to the release of highly poisonous chemicals which threaten the environment and human health.
In April 1998, Carlisle City Council did a cost comparison between PVC-u and high performance, softwood doubleglazed units. It found that PVC-u windows were 25% more expensive initially, with negligible difference in costs over a 30-year period.
National Building Federation’s “Standards and Quality in Development” gives PVC-u window frames a life expectancy of 20 to 25 years, and vacuum-treated softwood frames 25 to 35 years.
As uPVC window frames up and down the UK are starting to crack, fail and become brittle a nationwide re-evaulation of window frames is starting to take place. House builders, home owners, businesses and council officials across the UK now understand that timber windows are cheaper, last longer and are much more environmentally friendly.
We’ve been making timber windows – from the start.
J Philips Joinery Manufacturers have obviously always specialised in manufacturing timber products including timber window frames for well over 40 years. In that time we’ve worked on countless heritage buildings and seen timber windows well over 100 years old. We know timber window frames last a very long time with little maintenance from year to year. Modern pressure treating processes ensure they are now even more durable than the frames of the past too.
We’ve have also understood it makes far more environment sense to use timber window frames. Timber is grown sustainably, whilst tree grow they remove carbon from the atmosphere and of course when disposed of timber bio-degrades.
